Last night we went to see the incredibly talented Kate Tempest. It was at the BAC and it had a really cool mini theater kind of vibe, squeezing in only about 70 people. Her support acts were also something really special, Hollie Mcnish and Scroobius Pip, both real captivating performers and very comical. But of course it was Tempest’s night as it was the first of two nights where she was recording her new album live. Her new work is as good if not better than her old, no topic overdone, nothing two preachy or obvious, it was all beautifully powerful, melodic and heartfelt, especially the ‘Love’ poem that doesn’t even rhyme. The added extra of the evening was Kate’s chat between poems. Looking suitably coy and shy and rambling some of the funniest chat I’ve heard for quite some time, she is so beautifully humble and honest, something I think everyone in the audience loved and seriously connected with. On finishing her set to a standing ovation, Kate gave some food for thought. It wasn’t a soap box delivery, just true and genuinely refreshing fact. She basically said ‘if you don’t like the shit that goes on around you in the world, change it, don’t just sit there an moan about it’. Now anyone could say this but you need to be a certain kind or person for people to listen. She is that kind of person, it made me cry. This video is where we first saw Kate perform in a small chapel in the center of Soho. In awe ever since.
